Federal Research Funding Data Revamp Leads to more Accessible "R&D Dashboard"

Posted by BCI Staff on Thu, Aug 18, 2011

The Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has recently announced the reformation of the federal Research & Development expenditure website to make data more transparent and easy to navigate. This new online tool now allows the public to monitor national progress in technology and research innovation.

Called the R&D Dashboard, this new beta website will help in the demonstration and documentation of the effects of Federal R&D investments, with a focus upon the two integral agencies that are involved in more than 80% of Federal R&D funding: the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The R&D Dashboard functions mainly by linking Federal R&D awards for research facilities/institutions to specific patent applications, publications, and research patents funded by the former. Users can concentrate on certain topics of interest within institutional, state, or congressional district levels because of the sites ability to interpret from scientific documents and abstractions what specific topics are covered by particular publications/patents.

This handy navigational feature on the Dashboard allows a more personal connection to the R&D investments. In other words, by associating certain funds to certain scientific or technological advancements, users can now connect improvements to their communities and cities to the R&D investments in NIH and NSF. The website makes visible the success of certain institutions, topics, and scientific fields in winning these federal awards. Also transparent on the Dashboard are the results of such grants (i.e. research papers, patents and their applications and details) by location and topic area.

It is highly encouraged if you are an interested scientist, researcher, lab supplier, lab manager, or just an interested citizen to explore this website and leave commentary as to provide insight of improving the beta website to better serve the public.
