Univ of Minnesota and Mayo Clinic Partner in $3.5M Medical Research

The State of Minnesota is funding 5 medical research studies to be carried out by the Partnership for Biotechnology and Medical Genomics, a collaborative between the state's largest medical research institutions: the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis) and the Mayo Clinic (Rochester). This latest round of 2-year grants totals $3.5 Million.  If successful, the 5 projects will either produce results that qualify them for futher federal or private funding, or produce intellectual property that can be marketed.

The awards, by amount, went to:

  1. $915,508 - Cancer research by Chad Myers (PhD, UMN) and Dennis Wigle (MD, PhD, Mayo Clinic) to develop genetic mutations to kill cancer cells
  2. $799,516 - Neurological disease research by Sang-Hyun Oh (PhD, UMN) and Moses Rodriguez (MD, Mayo Clinic) to slow loss of brain function in Alzheimer's and MS
  3. $718,002 - Vascular disease research by Robert Simari (MD, Mayo Clinic) and Dan Kaufman (MD, PhD, UMN) to develop ways to grow new tissue for heart attack and stroke victims
  4. $648,645 - Diabetes research by Jonathan Slack (PhD, UMN, Director of UMN Stem Cell Research Institute) and Yasuhiro Ikeda (DVM, PhD, Mayo Clinic) to develop insulin-producing cells from skin cells
  5. $434,252 - Cancer research by Scott Kaufmann (MD, PhD, Mayo Clinic) and Daniel Harki (PhD, UMN) to monitor the effectiveness of different therapies
