Marine Animal Models in Evolution & Development

EMBO Practical Course - Fiskebäckskil, Sweden

This EMBO Practical Course focuses on the establishment of molecular techniques and genomic resources in both established and emerging marine animal models for the study of the developmental biology and evolution (evo-devo), marine neurobiology, behaviour and comparative genomics. Special focus of the 2013 practical course will be on the use of advanced imaging techniques such as Lightsheet Fluorescence Microscopy (LSFM) and in vivo lineaging

A major aim of this EMBO Practical Course is the establishment and transfer of state-of-the-art molecular, genomics and imaging techniques to a broad spectrum of new, emerging marine animal models. Experimentally, our focus will be on marine models, as these are highly relevant for many disciplines such as developmental biology, neurobiology and ecology, but remain largely unexplored. Given the peculiarity of marine ecosystems and the importance of ocean biology for climate change and other global challenges, marine sciences are an area of key scientific innovation. We will give a theoretical and practical introduction in this area, with emphasis on recent developments that can easily be applied on new marine models, such as 4D microscopy, Profiling by Image Registration (PrImR) and Lightsheet Fluorescence Microscopy (LSFM), in cooperation with Zeiss. The practical course will include a module about how to generate genomic resources for a new animal model taking advantage of new sequencing techniques. Also, we will teach microinjection, gain- and loss-of-function techniques, transgenesis and give a survey on second and third generation sequencing techniques and marine bioinformatics.
