International Course «Computational Phyloinformatics 2012»

Course - Moscow, Russian Federation

This course is a 12-day intensive summer workshop co-organized by Moscow State University, NESCent, Institute for Information Transmission Problems (Russian Academy of Sciences), and the Phyloinformatics Research Foundation, Inc. The workshop will take place at the New School Building of Moscow State University as a special event following the III Moscow International Conference on Molecular Phylogenetics MolPhy-3.

The workshop aims to give biologists practical knowledge and hands-on programming skills in support of high-throughput phylogenetics, functional genomics, and phyloinformatics, using scripting languages that include Perl, Ruby, and SQL. Students will learn how to write basic phylogenetic or comparative analysis scripts, parse various data files, traverse and compute over trees, and make practical use of phylogenetic software libraries. These skills will be learned in a biological context, touching on a diverse array of topics such as analysis of large datasets, automation of supertree assembly, scripting multiple sequence alignment processing, gene duplication inference, querying for topological patterns in large collections of trees, etc.

Instruction is in English and participants are encouraged to bring their own computers. Detailed information on the syllabus and admission can be found on the workshop website.
