Evidence Based Cancer Care and Research: the role of systematic reviews

Course - Belfast, United Kingdom

People working in cancer care often feel overwhelmed by new research findings, which are being produced at an ever-increasing rate. This ESO course at Queen’s University Belfast, UK will focus on how systematic reviews can help meet this challenge. It will also show how reviews can be a key part of the research process itself. The workshop provides an opportunity to find out more about how systematic reviews can help throughout the process of cancer research and care, from the bench to the bedside. It will involve a combination of lectures and small group activities, covering topics such as the identification of candidate therapies, stratified or individualised medicine and cancer registries, interlaced with teaching on the conduct and use of systematic reviews. There will be ample opportunity for discussion during the course, both within the small groups and in the lectures. The topics to be covered in depth will be selected for their relevance to the participants.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Participants will learn how to:
• Formulate the question for a systematic review
• Develop and implement a search strategy for a review
• Appraise, summarise and analyse a variety of types of evidence and knowledge relevant to cancer care
• Apply the knowledge in decision making

MAIN TOPICS
• Evidence Based Cancer Care
• Research
