Public lecture by Professor Christopher Dye FRS, Director of Health Information at the World Health Organization and Visiting Professor of Zoology at the University of Oxford.
Infectious diseases will be eliminated and replaced by chronic "lifestyle" diseases as fertility falls and life expectancy steadily increases. This is the standard story of the "epidemiologic transition", but it is not turning out as we imagined. Attempts to interrupt transmission have contained some pathogens but not others, altered the characteristics of disease agents through evolution, and influenced the course of chronic diseases in unexpected ways. So which infections will be controlled, and which ones will continue to plague us in the coming decades?
