New research labs and buildings are appearing on-campus at the University of Nevada, Reno.  Recently construction was completed on a building that will be a hub for science research.  The Pennington Health and Science Building is standout among other research buildings on campus, with over 59,000 square feet of laboratory, classroom and office space. Here are some quick highlight points on one of Nevada's most cutting edge research facilities. 

Tomorrow's Brilliant Laboratory Scientists Rock iGEM Synthetic Biology Competition

The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) undergraduate competition is an annual event sponsored by MIT that challenges teams of undergraduate scientists around the world to design and build novel biological systems from standardized "biological parts".  The 2011 Competition just wrapped up, with the World Championship Jamboree held at MIT over the weekend of Nov. 5-7. Sixty-five teams advanced to the Championships from the three Regional Competitions: the Americas, Asia, and Europe.  The Grand Prize was taken by the team from the University of Washington, in Seattle.

The University of Nevada, Reno recently unveiled the new MacLean  Astronomy Building and Observatory Complex. The new buildings were largely made possible by new funding from the Jack Van Sickle Foundation which gave generously to UNR in 2010.
